The Office of Academic
Affairs is responsible for carrying out the educational
administrative affairs of the university. It is
comprised of the Registration Section, Curriculum
Section, Admissions Section, Section for Excellence and
Learning in Teaching, Digital Media Research and
Production Center and the General Education Center.
Feng Chia University
is one of the largest comprehensive universities in
Taiwan, possessing seven colleges and schools, namely
the College of Engineering, College of Business, College
of Sciences, College of Construction and Development,
College of Humanities and Social Sciences, College of
Information and Electrical Engineering, School of
Management Development and College of Continuing
Education. Each works to provide practical education and
training to cultivate well-rounded individuals,
possessing fundamental knowledge and professional skills
and ethics. With a solid academic foundation built on
more than 40 years of experience, Feng Chia University
has graduated tens of thousands of outstanding
professionals, who have significantly contributed to a
variety of fields. |

I |
Promote course work guidance for student
academic success: |
|
|
- Midterm and final
examinations times are unified, and these
examinations are normally held over the course of
one week.
- Faculty members
must arrange office hours at least four times per
week to answer student questions and provide course
work guidance.
- An advising
professor system has been put into place to assist
students in course selection and academic
development.
- Guidance is
provided to students on further study and career
opportunities.
- To raise the level
of quality of education, in addition to carry out
rigorous assessment of student course work, a system
has been put into place to assess student learning
outcomes.

Upgrade educational facilities and
emphasize student lab experience: |
|
|
- To complement
mid-term campus development plans, Ministry of
Education subsidies, National Science Council grants
and collaborative research projects, each department
purchases required educational and research
equipment.
- Graduate students
serve as teaching assistants to provide
undergraduate laboratory education.
- Acquisition of
library materials and computer facilities is carried
out. Currently, the main library possesses more than
480,000 volumes and more than 5,000 Chinese and
foreign language periodicals.
- The Information
Center is the largest among central Taiwan
universities. There are more than 10 computer
classrooms possessing more than 1,000 personal
computers and hundreds of work stations, as well as
numerous large-scale computer systems and a campus
optical fiber network.

Strengthen faculty qualifications,
maintain appropriate teacher-to-student ratios: |
|
|
- Faculty members
are encouraged to undergo further training overseas.
Currently, more than 30 faculty members are enrolled
in doctoral programs in Taiwan and abroad.
- As of the 1999
academic year, there were 538 faculty members. Among
them 340 held a doctoral degree.

Provide opportunities for general
education to expand student knowledge: |

|
- The General
Education Center is responsible for planning general
education curricula and carrying out related
administrative affairs.
- The General
Education Committee suggests general education
course subjects and content and carries out
evaluation and review of general education outcomes.

Strengthen foreign language education and
foreign language skills: |
|
|
- To raise the level
of English ability among students, courses are
available in English conversation, English reading,
public speaking in English and applied English.
- Elective courses
are also available in Japanese, German, French and
Spanish.

Plan educational programs to cultivate
teacher diversity: |
|
|
To cultivate instructor diversity, a teacher education
center was established to develop educational programs
for teachers at the secondary school level. |

VII |
Integrate science and technology to build
on the university’s strengths: |
|
|
- Emphasis is placed
on research and development to raise academic
standards. The integration of science and technology
is promoted to encourage faculty to participate in
constructive group research projects.
- To carry out group
research projects, departments have set up several
research centers, such as the Geographic Information
Systems Research Center and the Construction and
Disaster Prevention Center.

Encourage academic research and promote
improvements in the quality of education: |

|
- Rewards are given
to faculty with excellent yearly performance reviews
to encourage excellence in academics and research.
- Faculty members
are encouraged to apply for National Science Council
research grants and to participate in collaborative
research projects.
- Rewards are given
to faculty members who present papers at
international academic conferences and subsidies are
provided for travel expenses.

Carry out review and evaluation of
education and strive for best practices in education: |

|
- Conduct surveys
and reviews of courses each semester to serve as
references for improving teaching and education.
- Institute an
awards system to recognize outstanding instructors.

Strengthen computerization of academic
affairs work to increase service quality: |
|
|
- Registration,
course selection, course scheduling, transcripts and
student records are all computerized, for prompt and
accurate handling of information.
- Computerization of
and use of online resources for academic affairs
work has simplified the procedures and processes for
various student applications, leading to improved
service quality.
